Introduction

Gather the family for a fun and flavorful meal with these Homemade Sloppy Joes! This classic, kid-approved dish features a savory tomato-based sauce with seasoned ground beef, all piled high on a toasted bun. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a casual weekend lunch, this simple recipe allows everyone to get involved in the kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • ½ cup water

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 4 hamburger buns

Cooking Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.

  2. Once cooked, drain any excess fat and add the onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until the vegetables soften.

  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  4. Add the ketchup, water, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

  5. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. Toast the hamburger buns and place a generous amount of sloppy joe mixture onto each bun.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Homemade Sloppy Joes with your favorite side dishes like sweet potato fries, crispy onion rings, or a fresh green salad. Don't forget the napkins for this delightfully messy meal!

Cooking Tips

  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with cooked lentils, mushrooms, or crumbled tofu.

  • To add more vegetables, incorporate diced carrots, celery, or zucchini into the mix.

  • For a spicier kick, increase the amount of chili powder or add a dash of hot sauce to the sauce mixture.
